40 teams consisting of architects and landscape architects submitted their designs and models to the design competition. The jury met from October 25 to 26, 2016 and discussed all of the submitted entries. The first prize was awarded to the design submitted by the Swiss architects Herzog & de Meuron. The second prize was awarded to the design by the Danish office Lundgaard & Tranberg and the third prize was awarded to the office Bruno Fioretti Marquez based in Berlin.

All submitted entries were exhibited from November 18, 2016 to January 8, 2017 in the Berlin Kulturforum. On the occasion of the opening Arno Lederer, chairman of the jury, spoke about the winning designs and commendations from the jury’s point of view and a panel discussed the winning entry. An exhibition at the Kulturforum in Berlin showed from November 17, 2016 to January 8, 2017 all designs and models submitted to the design competition.

On the occasion of the opening of the exhibition Arno Lederer, chair of the jury, spoke to the participants of the competition. In his speech he looked back on the competition and the jury sessions. He also presented the winning designs and commendations from the jury's point of view.

Paneldiscussion on the Winning Entry

At the opening of the exhibition Udo Kittelmann, Director of the Nationalgalerie, Pierre de Meuron and Ascan Mergenthaler, Herzog & de Meuron and Arno Lederer, chairman of the jury took part in a panel discussion entitled “The Neue Nationalgalerie extends its Space – Presentation of the Winning Entry”. Claudia Henne from Radio Berlin-Brandenburg moderated the exchange.
