Steps required from competition design to construction start

After the competition, a series of further plans and agreements are necessary before building construction can begin.

On the one hand, under the leadership of the architect and together with museum experts, the planning team must develop the building further. They are responsible for specifying the building’s floor plan; meaning that they decide where the exhibition areas, storerooms, teaching rooms, and restaurants will be. In addition, they plan the façade’s material properties, its outer appearance, in detail.

On the other hand, the building authority must create the necessary technical conditions. For example, they test the soil at the building site and ensure that the utility lines beneath the construction area are moved.

Architectural board advises

As the project owner and in agreement with the director of the Foundation board, Minister of State Monika Grütters, the Stiftung Preussischer Kulturbesitz (Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation, SPK) has created an advisory board to monitor the planning for the Museum des 20. Jahrhunderts (Museum of the 20th Century) in Berlin’s Kulturforum. During the design competition in October 2017, the jury recommended this step. As a neutral body located at the interface of politics, public, building owner, and building administration, the architectural board will provide advice when the Stiftung Preussischer Kulturbesitz faces difficult issues and act as a mediator, if necessary.

The president of the SPK, Hermann Parzinger, has appointed the following architects:
