Berlin’s most interesting construction site is located at the Kulturforum near Potsdamer Platz. In the next few years, a new home for the Nationalgalerie’s collection of 20th century art will be built here. In November 2014 on the initiative of Beauftragte der Bundesregierung für Kultur und Medien (Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media) Monika Grütters, the German Bundestag Budget Committee resolved to make €200 million available for this project. The Stiftung Preußischer Kulturbesitz chose a two-part process to arrive at the winning design for the new museum building “Neue Nationalgalerie – Museum des 20. Jahrhunderts” at the Kulturforum. In late October 2016 the jury awarded the first prize to the Swiss architects Herzog & de Meuron. After decades of standstill the last available site in the Kulturforum will be developed.
All of the entries in the design competition are exhibited at the Kulturforum until January 8, 2017.
Notwithstanding that the website’s title is “Nationalgalerie20” and the domain’s name is www.nationalgalerie20.de, a final decision has not been made about the building’s official name.
